January 3, 2014 in Doing Dance, Hi, I have an audition for the royal ballet school in a couple of weeks for senior associates and I don't have a clue what's going to happen. Try not to worry about the other auditionees, just go and treat it like a workshop. Matthew Bourne is an excellent example. My point exactly. Another thing I'm wary of is the fact that they are obviously looking for a certain type. My daughter was an MA applying to be an SA. I didn't even know it was just an ordinary class so that has brought down some of the nerves. And failure to get into RBS can seem like the end of the world to a vulnerable young dancer, it can be a knock that is hard to take. Yes sparkly. This can occasionally include children who were auditioning solely for SA's but who they see potential in for full time training. When ds auditioned they saw just under 1000 children and there were just under a hundred spaces available I believe ( figures quoted by RBS) so not great odds! I meant dd's dance teacher not dads. Moral of the story is to be prepared. When my dd did her preliminary audition for Elmhurst they had to do some pointe work. Hello Docs and Dancing, welcome to the Forum. Our dance school head would never have got into JAs, let alone RBS, but was head girl at RAD. My 8 yr old dd's ballet teacher has suggested that she audition for the royal ballet school junior associates programme. Dh teaches post 16 only so has an insight into the audition process at 16 & has been on panels. Me and DSis pregnant. Dd will do 9 GCSEs. Obviously if you are not necessarily committed to ballet then it is probably not the best option. However auditioning for JAs and attending if successful would give a child an insight to how RBS works and if they did feel that committed to ballet and RBS. Thanks! There are other associate programmes as well tho: Elmhurst run a good one near us, and the RAD run one too. Hi Docs and Dancing. They also only do Ballet and character dance. Whether a child is a JA or not is not that important when it comes to auditioning for vocational schools either. Do you know if this happens also at the SA only audition, the one that is not on the same day as the WL audition? Clearly we're very proud of dd as she's obviously showing some promise and I can see it would be an amazing opportunity but it also fills me with fear as it is a completely alien world to me and one I'm sure would be viciously competitive and require huge time and financial commitment. Looking back over this thread I can see that I have sounded negative about RBS. The panel are looking for physique, good technique, flexibility but not super duper flexibilit, musicality and a love for dance. But very sure of what he wants already. Also do you have to wear soft blocks? I didn't think so... No, you are correct there is only one audition for SA's. My 8 yr old dd's ballet teacher has suggested that she audition for the royal ballet school junior associates programme. And only about 5 GCSEs. Hi, have raised this on a different thread but thought I'd start a new one specifically on this topic. I have moved your query to the Doing Dance section where members are more likely to be able to help you. I am not saying that its a waste of time. Enjoy the experience and good luck. There were about 11 girls across both yr groups including many from abroad and a few boys. You need to be a member in order to leave a comment. Ballet Boost Associates (BBA) is a vocational Sunday ballet training programme for gifted dancers aged 8+ and is hosted in London, Hull, Devon, Stoke and Belfast. (they allowed us to bring water into the audition) It consisted of the 'judges' looking at you from different angles (front, side, back, first position and plié), a barre with plies, tendu, ron de jambe, and developpe and then there were simple stretches (chest to knees, right split into box split into left split), there was then a port de bras, adage, allegro some very simple pirouettes and lots of jumping including split leaps. 12 boys and 12 girls. Junior Associate Auditions are held in May and are for courses which start in September. Op it dies sound as if the commitment would be too much for you but I agree with talking to her about it.With ds I had two older boys but now I've got dd plus a toddler so I couldn't fit it all in. Junior Associates are young dancers aged 8 to 10 who train with The Royal Ballet School at their 8 centres around the country, alongside their regular ballet class. She also does lots of other things including being part of a theatre group and singing. She wants to do musical theatre/holiday entertainer so this is right for her. I'd really welcome views and opinions to help me get my head round it! I am glad that dds school still do vocational grades (I believe RBS has stopped doing them) as it makes applying for a DDI or RAD teaching diploma easier & is another string to the bow. It is a good oppurtunity. Those successful at the preliminary audition will be invited to a final one held at WL. Sign up for a new account in our community. There was a time when we thought it would never happen, but last week my daughter finally got her chance to shine in her audition for a Junior Associate place at the Royal Ballet.. I'm happy I could help... DD does not do syllabus work so I can't answer your question... She's in her 7th year of ballet if that gives you a point of reference... What about you? They told us on the audition insight day that there is no pointework at the preliminary audition, only at finals. The teachers are always lovely and everyone is encouraging and wants you to do your best. Obviously if your DD is 'horrified' by only doing ballet then it wouldn't be the place for her, but really I think you should stop being so anti-RBS when it seems you have no first hand experience. She ticked the box for WL as she thought she had nothing to lose by doing so. Apply online here. MaisyMoo123 Wed 08-Jan-14 22:25:30. It just feels a bit like a factory and I wonder if they are only picked if they are the right look and shape rather than showing real talent? What is it like doing a childrens ballet audition in London? Letters also state no make up although some girls wear a minimal amount. MaisyMoo123 Wed 08-Jan-14 22:25:30. I still don't believe them to be meaningless though. Remembering competition is especially tough for girls as there are so many applying. Also workshops are always a good thing to do with the RAD as they have some exceptional teachers and are fun. Fair enough. I had the SA audition in Birmingham this week, it was a quite simple audition but very tiring so make sure you have plenty of water! The standard is greatly varied and there were some girls who hadn't covered some of the steps like jetes. Welcome to the Forum, Balletlife. It does make me realise how much of an alien world all this is to me though! Also what should I wear and what about makeup? Having watched many of our senior dancers audition they all take with them to auditions portfolios with latest exam grades and head shots/ full length pictures. Thanks everyone! After the barre you are sent into the centre and have to go down in right leg split, hold, turn into box, hold and then turn into left leg split. wrong body type & not flexible enough. Dd was horrified when she said they only do ballet. Yes, for some I am sure it is the experience of a lifetime. Hi, have raised this on a different thread but thought I'd start a new one specifically on this topic. Auditions take place in the Autumn and Spring Terms. I am not saying they are taken into much consideration, but they are looked at. I'm wondering if I should take that as her answer to whether she'd like to go to the audition or whether I should tell her so she can make her own mind up. Has anybody got any experience of this? Auditions are held in the Summer Term and are for courses which start in September. Bring your pointe shoes as you may be asked to wear them. Enjoy the experience and good luck. All the girls had pointe shoes with them. My DD also has an audition for Senior Associates early Feb. Hi afab, mine is in Manchester on the 22nd January good luck to your daughter! No, you don't need to wear soft blocks. Thanks for all the great answers and explanations! You then do a port de bras, adage, 1 or 2 pirouette exercises and some allegro. so many people had said no you don't do pointe at preliminary auditions. Really interesting to read all your posts. Pupils continue to study with their regular dance teacher, in addition to their Associate classes each Saturday. This is why I am so wary of it to be honest. During the year students have the opportunity to learn some of Scottish Ballet's repertoire taught by Company dancers. I have done quite a few royal auditions and did the SA audition two years ago. She has never once complained to dd, but her mother has spoken about how hard it can be. Your dd may not be ballet mad at the moment but that can very quickly change, particularly if she was accepted as a JA. Dd never auditioned & would never have got into JAs.
